Adult Learning Opportunities

Here at St. Philip the Deacon, we are blessed in so many ways and have much to celebrate. Among the things for which we are truly grateful is the vibrant growing faith community and its eagerness to reach out, proclaim and inspire.  Opportunities to meet new people, grow in faith, and make a difference across the street, in the city and around the world give shape to all of our program ministries this fall.

Adult learning opportunities scheduled include the return of favorite classes, studies, faith experiences and small groups (like Fully Devoted, Sunday Morning Book Study and Discussion Group, Alpha, Great Dates, Worship in the World and several men’s and women’s groups) as well as new learning opportunities (see the partial list below).  Watch the weekly worship folder, the monthly newsletter, and check the e news and website for regular updates including start dates and meeting times.

As always, I am here to support your faith journey.  If you need help in finding resources for your existing group or would like to start a new group, I invite you to contact me at any time:

Expressions of Faith:  Faithbooking

This is the first in a series of creative studies.  Faithbooking is a scrapbooking Bible Study for women.  Each week we will bring our memories, photos, and faith stories together with God’s Word as we create pages for our memory books.  This class meets Wednesdays at 7 pm beginning September 29.  Registration is required.

Great Parenting

This class is designed to encourage and support parents of preschoolers in nurturing faith in Jesus Christ in the home.  Meeting monthly we will read Marilyn Sharpe’s book For Heaven’s Sake! and use it as our guide for navigating these important and formative years in the life of our children.  Our first class will meet Wednesday, October 6 at 6 pm.  Childcare is provided.  Registration is necessary.

Study Group for Professional Women

This new small group will meet for the first time Thursday, September 23 at 7 pm.  Members will gather monthly for refreshments, fellowship and faithful conversation as they seek to grow deeper in their relationship with our Lord.  Registration is helpful but not required.

Books of Faith

Join Pastor Mathison for a single session class on how to turn storytime into family devotion time!  Participants will learn a simple model for leading bedtime devotions with children (birth through elementary age) and each will receive ample resources to support household devotions for months to come!  Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 17 at 7 pm.   Grandmas and Grandpas are welcome and encouraged to come too!

Advent Meditations

Not a class but an opportunity to slow down and be still during one of the busiest seasons of the year.  Each Wednesday at noon, we will gather in our worship center for 30 minutes of prayer, meditation, hymn singing, and scripture.  Worship will be led by Pastors Mathison and Strand Patterson.  Block out your lunch break now and join us for this necessary time apart.  Wednesdays December 1 – 22 at noon.  No registration required.
