The Rite of Confirmation is administered to 9th grade students who have completed the confirmation preparation program at St. Philip the Deacon. Each student will have the opportunity to be prayed for, to participate in a number of services and to publicly affirm their faith.
Students must register to be a part of the Rite of Confirmation.

The Rite of Confirmation Program consists of four events:
Student Rehearsal/Parent Meeting - Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.
The students meet upstairs in the Sanctuary. They will rehearse for the confirmation service (which is Jan. 14). They will also have their photos taken. Students should dress up for this rehearsal. There will be a group photo taken, and each student will also have an individual photo taken. Students will receive a copy of the group photo as a gift from SPD. The individual photos will be available online and families will have the opportunity to view them before ordering. (Confirmation Photo Order Form, PDF)
While the students are upstairs the parents will be meeting downstairs in the Center for Faith and Life, to go through all the details of each of the confirmation services.
The Blessing of the Confirmands - Jan. 7 and 8, 2017
The Blessing of the confirmands is offered at each of the worship services—Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. Students attend their normal worship service.
The Celebration of Passage - Tuesday, Jan. 10 or Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
The Celebration of Passage is a special service that is just for confirmation students, their parents and prayer partners. Parents have the opportunity to choose the prayer partner for their student, if there is someone special in the life of the child—a grandparent, godparent, aunt, uncle, coach, confirmation guide, etc.—they may be asked to be the student’s prayer partner. Otherwise, we have many people within the congregation who would consider it a privilege to be a prayer partner for a confirmation student.
The role of the Prayer Partner is 3 fold:
- Most importantly, to be praying for the student as they prepare to be confirmed.
- Write the student a letter encouraging them in their faith before the Celebration of Passage. Also, to connect in person with the student—that could be meeting for a cup of coffee, attending a students’ sporting event or even just connecting at church to say, "Hi!"
- The Prayer Partner will be a part of the Celebration of Passage. (They must be able to be at the Celebration that the student attends.) They will walk alongside the student as they take their “walk of faith.” More information about the Celebration of Passage will be given at the Parent Meeting in January.
An important piece to the Celebration of Passage is that each student receives a packet of letters and a collage from their family. Click these links to see the packet instructions, a sample parent letter and a sample collage.
Rite of Confirmation Worship Service - Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m.
This is the official Rite of Confirmation worship service. Families choose either the 11 a.m. or the 2 p.m. service.
