What is the 30 Hour Famine?

If you don’t know what the 30-Hour Famine is or have never participated in the past – here is a basic concept of what it is:

Why we do it:  Every day 24,000 kids die from hunger and disease.  8,000 of these kids are under the age of 5.  As I am sure you have heard before and are aware, these are unfortunate statistics because hunger around the world is 100% preventable.

What we do:  We are asking groups to organize an event with their church on Friday, March 11th to Saturday, March 12th.  This event can be for both middle school and high school youth!  There are four main parts to this event, but in the end you have full control over how your event looks.  Here are the four parts that we would hope you would include.

1)      Use the event to educate your youth about local and global poverty.

2)      Participate in the Friday night, March 11th large group gathering from 7:30-9:30 with other churches from across the metro area.

3)      Have your youth raise funds to donate to World vision 30-Hour Famine and ELCA World Hunger.

4)      Ask your youth to go 30 hours with no food.  (We encourage a juice famine where they can drink different juices and of course water.)  Typically this is done by having the youth eat breakfast on Friday morning - This is their last meal until Saturday afternoon when you and your group “break fast” together.  (The neat thing with this is that the kids go without a lunch at school and their friends notice, creating awareness at school!)
